Alfred Janes

Alfred Janes was a central figure in that brilliant generation of artists, poets and composers who grew to maturity in Swansea in the 1930's. Well known for his portraits of his friend Dylan Thomas, many also know him as an exceptional artist who continued to experiment and develop throughout his long career. He had exhibited with this gallery since it opened in 1962 and in 1995 held a retrospective exhibition at this gallery. He died, aged 87 in February 1999. He was a quiet and amiable man, with a gentle wit. It is a sad loss for us personally and for the arts in Wales.
