Gareth Parry RCA was born in Blaenau Ffestiniog in 1951 into a family of mostly quarrymen. He studied for a time at the Manchester School of Art but, disillusioned, he returned home and worked in a local slate quarry for two years before taking up art again but as a living. He established himself not only through private commissions but as a fine illustrator. However, after a number of years, he decided to take the direction he had always wanted and that was to concentrate on his painting.
Interest in his work has grown rapidly since the new millennium. In 2001 he had a major exhibition at the National Library of Wales where they purchased several paintings for the national collection, and in 2006 he was elected to the Royal Cambrian Academy. His work is very much about Wales and the Welsh - a deep understanding of both the landscape and the people who occupy it. His “people paintings” are based on observation and often inspired by overheard snippets of conversation.
