Glenys Cour

Glenys Cour is widely regarded as one of the great colourists of Wales. She studied at Cardiff College of Art with Ceri Richards in the 1940s and later taught colour and visual research in Swansea's prestigious architectural glass department. She has had solo exhibitions at the Davies Memorial Gallery in Newtown, the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery and the University of Exeter, among others, and has shown at the Attic Gallery since it first opened. Her commissions include prize-winning Swansea Festival posters, stage designs, and the Dylan Thomas memorial window at Swansea Grammar School. She is represented in all major Welsh public collections.

"I have used collage as my chosen medium for many years. In 2003 when I exhibited at the Glynn Vivian I showed collages, gold and rich colours; but I included a small retrospective of early oil paintings of landscape. Then I realised I must paint again!

Through my window in Mumbles I have a lovely view of sky and sea, a vast horizon stretching for miles. This is a theatre of constantly changing moods, a drama of colour and shape dominated by shadow and light. For many years I have lived on the doorstep of Gower enjoying my favourite seasons, winter and autumn. In winter, the golden bays are vast and empty with the occasional solitary figure set against the dark sea. In the autumn the curve of Cefn Bryn is magical, burning with orange, plum and ochre in the low sun.

From here the endless low horizons of North Gower stretch into the imagination. Why should I look further for my inspiration? "
