Maurice Sheppard

Maurice Sheppard was born in Llangwm, Pembrokeshire in 1947. At the Royal College of Art he studied under Ruskin Spear, Donald Hamilton Frazer and Robert Buhler and Carel Weight.

He knew from his student days the path that his painting should take. His inspiration came from the strong and enduring tradition of British figurative art and also from nature. That is not to say he closed his eyes to what was going on amongst his contemporaries. He is better known as a watercolour painter, indeed he was the first Welsh President of the Royal Watercolour Society.

He has exhibited widely, exhibiting in leading galleries across the United Kindom and beyond, and his work may be found both in major public and private collection. He work has been selected many years running for the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition.

"The veiled light of Winter, and the long strands of gold light at dusk of a January day set in motion the long process of my contemplating qualities in the landscape. Textures, time and change of both light and tone in the detail of locations give me the kind of presence I enjoy most. Browns, sharp greens, creamy greys, and ochres across empty spaces make a quiet palette of wished for, desired colours; the colours found in stones on a Pembrokeshire beach - muted - even silenced. Natural dramas - a stream cutting through rock, the great bulk of trees - fallen, or with ivy and ferns clasping them tight attracts me. The need for patience and quiet and composure slows me down to distil what I find to make often quite small pieces of painting."
