Richard Oliver

Richard Oliver is a young artist who has already made an impact on the Welsh art scene. He was born in Cilfynydd, South Wales and graduated in Fine Art in 1997 from the University of the West of England. He returned to Wales to live and work as an artist, and since his return his reputation as an artist has rapidly grown. He has held a number of solo shows and received several awards for his work and undertaken a number of commissions. One such commission was for the Rhondda Heritage Centre and consisted of a large mural, which formed part of their "Price of Coal" exhibition. More recently the BBC purchased a major work for their Cardiff headquarters.
His paintings reflect his upbringing in a South Wales valley community. Some echo an uncomfortable history as the valleys struggle to forge a new identity after the collapse of the coal industry that sustained them. Many of the characters are taken from his past and present and the images produced are influenced by his memories and relationships with these people. A recent theme running through his work is the juxtaposition of contemporary Welsh life with legends from the Mabinogion.

" The language I have chosen to develop takes the form of exaggerated figures, heightening the expression. I have also adopted cartoon-like imagery to convey my intentions because this style is universal, common and recognised by people outside the art world."

This visual language, with some figures bordering on the cartoon-like, directly engages the viewer. However, in his most recent painting there is also evidence of development, of a freer use of paint, more spontaneity, especially within his landscapes

Richard Oliver (as Jamie Oliver) is currently a member of the band Lost Prophets. His commitment to the band, (touring internationally etc) has meant he has not painted for a number of years.
