From his early twenties to his mid
thirties, Hicks-Jenkins was a highly successful choreographer, director
and stage designer, creating productions with leading companies.
His stage designs were characterised by powerful artistic vision,
and exhibitions of his design drawings were held at galleries and
museums. Examples were purchased for the Theatre Museum, Covent
Garden, and other collections.
He moved back to Wales in the late
1980's and began to concentrate on his work as an artist. His first
solo show was held at the Kilvert Gallery in 1996 and since then
has exhibited regularly in London, Bath, Cardiff and Attic Gallery
in Swansea. The Mare's Tale, which ran from 19th May to 30th June
2001 at Newport Museum and Art Gallery was his first major solo
show in a public gallery and was critically acclaimed.
In 1999 Hicks-Jenkins was winner of
the Gulbenkian Welsh Art Prize and he was runner-up as Welsh Artist
of the Year in 2000. His work has become widely recognised in recent
years for its painterly sensibility. It has grown from his rootedness
in Welsh Heritage yet it is universal in its reference and relevance.
