2000 Chris Griffin and Mike Jones - New Paintings
Chris Griffin was
born in Mid Glamorgan and graduated from the Royal College
of Art, London in 1975. He is a regular exhibitor across
Wales with a number of recent solo shows. In 1997 was a
national prize winner in the prestigious Laing Landscape
competition and in 1998 was a regional prize winner.

For some time, his work has come to rely on the emotional
quality of colour, and his latest work confirms this trend.
The starting point of his paintings are the streets and
terraces of the South Wales valleys. He brings them to life
with vibrant colours and tones, reflecting his fondness
and attachment to the places he knows so well.

Mike Jones was
born in Neath, West Glamorgan and lives and paints in the
Swansea Valley. He retired several years ago to paint full
time and he has been a regular exhibitor in mixed exhibitions
across South Wales and held a number of successful shows
in Swansea and Cardiff. He has earned his reputation through
his evocative portrayal of the South Wales landscape and
its people. In 1998 his work was hung at Mall Galleries,
London as a Laing National Finalist.

His new paintings for this exhibition amplify his exploration
with structure, texture, colour and subject matter. Mood
and atmosphere are captured in the simplest of subjects.
His distinctive style whether in the interpretation of fishing
boats in the docks at Swansea, or hill farms in the Black
Mountains, produce powerful images.
