Glenys Cour

Glenys Cour

Glenys I Cour ATD, RCA, MA (Honorary), Fellow UW, was born in Fishguard, Pembrokeshire in 1924 and studied at Cardiff College of Art under Ceri Richards. She lectured at Swansea College of Art for many years in both the Painting and Architectural Glass Departments. She is one of the founding artists of our gallery, exhibiting in our first exhibition in June 1962 and showing here in group and solo shows ever since.

Her work as painter and designer has been exhibited widely in the UK, Europe and USA. She has held major exhibitions at Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea (2003, 2016), St. Davids Hall, Cardiff (1991) and Attic Gallery, Swansea (2005, 2017). Her highly praised retrospective exhibition at the newly refurbished Glynn Vivian Art Gallery closed on 12 February 2017. This was followed by a very sucessful solo show of her latest work which opened at our gallery 4 March 2017.

For many years collage was her main medium of expression. More recently she has returned to the landscape for inspiration and most recently of all flowers have caught her imagination.

Her paintings are in numerous public and private collections, including the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea ,The National Museum of Wales, The Kunsthalle Museum Mannheim, Swansea University, the BBC Collection and that of the late Princess of Wales.

Her main preoccupation is with colour, and her work both in oil on paper and on canvas, she sees as metaphors for the drama, mystery and mood of the landscapes, seascapes and skies of Gower. Her inspiration has come from the work of Rothko, Turner and Caspar David Friedrich.

Peter Wakelin writes - "Glenys has never stood still as an artist, as her recent retrospective at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery proved. She has committed herself to investigation and exploration since she was taught by the brilliantly experimental Ceri Richards at Cardiff College of Art in the 1940s. And what amazing energy there is in these latest paintings, completely fresh but growing from a root stock that is nobody’s but hers."
