Thomas Haskett was born and raised in rural Kent. He left to study illustration at Falmouth School of Arts in Cornwall where he lived and worked for some time as a freelance illustrator. He has now relocated to the western fringes of Pembrokeshire where he focuses on his painting.
Whilst living in Cornwall he developed a love and an aptitude for reportage illustration, working outdoors in pen and ink and watercolour in a series of small sketchbooks. This technique evolved and still painting directly from his subject, he exchanged the watercolours for a much looser approach in oils, with thicker, richer paint and larger canvases.
His exhibition at the Attic Gallery in April 2016 saw him advancing into yet larger formats and featured a number of studio paintings amongst the ‘plein air’ pieces. His love for his surroundings and his interest in vernacular buildings are conveyed in these works, which are unmistakably inspired by his adoptive West Wales home.
