Alan Roberts was born in Liverpool in 1953, where he spent his childhood. Educated at Merchant Taylor’s, he then studied Physics and Materials at Aston University in Birmingham. Having achieved a doctorate, he pursued a career in high temperature materials research both in university and industry where he developed his interest in vitreous materials. In the 80’s, after the government stopped funding aerospace research, he went into business and then teaching.
Having retired recently, he is now pursuing a lifelong interest in the arts and is creating individual fused glass artworks in a variety of styles.
I derive my influences from a wide variety of subjects. These include the natural world, the political situation of the country, the inequalities produced by our financial system and the state of our world. I like to use my glass as a vehicle to comment on the absurdities I see in everyday life.
My love of experimentation leads me to incorporate different materials, as I did in my research, which often gives unexpected and interesting results. My main hope is that seeing my work will give people pause for thought.
