Sara Philpott is a painter and print-maker who studied at Central School of Art and Design, London, graduating in 1984. She exhibited in London for several years before moving to Wales. Her paintings are shown mainly in London and selected Welsh galleries and her original printmaking work for private presses such as Gwasg Gregynog and The Old Stile Press features in public and private collections worldwide.
"She has established herself as a foremost artist in Wales. Moving here the landscape had a profound effect: her response to the woods and hills of mid-Wales led her to a new phase of neo-Romantic paintings with some early indications of what was to become a very distinctive vision and palette.
Her images for books by The Old Stile Press demonstrate on one hand a considerable technical talent and on the other an outstanding empathetic insight, which not only reflects the poems’ meanings but fires her own emotional and intellectual response.
Unlike some artists working in Wales, Sara Philpott’s work has never become formulaic. Her independence and creativity has echoes with many of the great artists of the past. She is not a great self-publicist but her strength as a colourist makes her widely accessible to many who simply enjoy the painterly sparkle of her work."
