The Royal Watercolour Society of Wales was formed in 1959 by a small group of artists in Cardiff, but now has members living and working throughout Wales. In 2013 the Society was honoured to receive the Royal Charter.

The RWSW continues to encourage and promote the art of watercolour painting in Wales and beyond, and aims to have at least 2 important exhibitions per year at prestigious venues, to showcase the new work of its members.

Its exhibitions generally explore the beauty of the landscape of Wales, its culture, people and heritage.

Today the Society has around 40 members, important professional artists with very diverse approaches to the art of watercolour painting, and as such its exhibitions are always varied, thought provoking and colourful.

The Society is keen to become more international in its approach and over the last few years has organized exchange exhibitions with French, Italian and Nordic Watercolour Societies.

The Society strives to attract younger talented artists to its ranks, to help develop these artists, and to achieve a balance of tradition and new approaches, to ensure that the Group is vibrant and evolving.

The Society is honoured to have HRH The Prince of Wales as its patron, who regularly exhibits with the Society, and its current President is Robert Macdonald a well known artist and writer based in Brecon.
