Carole Hopkins

Carole Morgan Hopkin M.A.

Born in Cardiff and educated at Cardiff College of Art and the University of Wales, Carole began to paint while on tour as an actress with the Welsh National Theatre Company. During her time in ‘The Mousetrap’ at the St. Martin’s Theatre she presented her work to the art buyer at Liberty of London. These watercolours sold almost instantly and Carole was offered an exhibition at the store. This was a sell-out, and because most of the buyers had been American it was suggested that the artist should move to the States.

She was her sister, Mary Hopkin’s manager for some time, travelling extensively worldwide while continuing to sketch and paint. In 1979 Carole accepted a post at the British Trade Office in New York, handling British Fashion and Textiles. Over the following five years she set up the annual European Fashion Fair and met Zandra Rhodes, Ossie Clark, Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Lauren, and many other top designers.

Her paintings of De la Renta’s home and Lauren’s Caribbean retreat resulted. In 1983 her painting of a house in Connecticut was featured in American Vogue and there followed many commissions to paint houses and gardens. Carole returned to Britain and sold her paintings again at Liberty of London.

Her work is to be seen at the Ardent Gallery, Brecon; the Mimosa Gallery, Llandeilo and at Summer Shows at the Albany Gallery, Cardiff and the Attic Gallery, Swansea in 2019.
