Jacob Buckland

Jacob Buckland is a landscape painter who lives in Carmarthenshire. Born in Somerset in 1973, he grew up in Shropshire.

In 1994 he was awarded an HND in Communication Art and Design at the Carmarthenshire College of Technology and Art.

He later gained his MA in this subject at the Royal College of Art, graduating in 2003. He was resident artist at the Nature in Art Museum, Gloucestershire - 2004, 2006, 2012, running workshops and was supporting artist for Criw Celf, Oriel Myrddin, Carmarthenshire - 2012 - 2014.

Much of his work is completed outdoors, from direct observation, often focussing on nature and the more remote areas of Wales. Weather and season play an important role in the choice of subject and location, and the work aims to reflect something of the variations of these effects on the land. “In addition to the usual medium of watercolour and ink, a number of recent ink drawings and oil paintings have taken the work in two directions. One, without colour, which concentrates on mark making and tone to explore light and texture in the landscape. The other, using rich, intense pigment, selected to develop structure and explore colour. My work is a response to observations and feelings about particular places and moments in time. Landscapes are transformed by weather and season, day and night, and can momentarily appeal to personal sensibilities”.
