Gareth Thomas (1955-2019)

He was born in Swansea in 1955 and attended Trinity College, Carmarthen.

In 1979 he decided to paint full time and the earlier part of his career was devoted to working in Wales.

He established his reputation with his sensitive watercolours, painting mostly outdoors to capture the constantly changing light and mood of the landscape. He has held numerous solo shows and his work is widely collected.

His paintings of the South Wales coastline and especially of Gower, where he lives, are much in demand. The beauty of this landscape continues to offer fresh challenges. For some years Provence, where he frequently goes to paint, has ignited his imagination and pushed him towards a more interpretative use of paint. He now works mostly in oil, acrylic and pastel. Each medium has in turn offered him fresh challenges and a new means to express his response to colour and light.

He is highly regarded for his interpretation of colour and light, which is driven by his passion for working outdoors. Each country’s landscape draws a different response and approach from the artist which is reflected in his choice of palette. His work continues to evolve with the use of bolder colour and more adventurous application of paint.

“As I approach my 40th year as an artist, I suppose I should be finding things a little easier but, truth be told, it just gets harder. The more you know, the more there is to know. By continuing to work mostly outdoors, I try to react to the land around me in a direct a way as possible. Larger paintings are produced in the studio but always using sketches and notes taken in situ. My abiding interest, as with many landscape artists, is the effect of light on colour, be it the more sombre atmospherics of Wales, or the pure Provencal sky.”
