Joan Liezers

Joan Liezers

Born in Cardiff, Joan had always been very creative and interested in reading, in particular poetry. She was truly excited as a youngster to get the works of Shakespeare for Christmas. She delighted in her first job at Cardiff Library. In her early forties, Joan was diagnosed with rapid onset Rheumatoid Arthritis which curtailed her working life, but opened up the world of art. Her travels to the Lake District, where she enjoyed walking, created much of Joan’s artistic inspiration. This is also true of her visits to Italy. Then on moving to Swansea, the Gower, local parks and seafront were on her doorstep. Joan was interested in wildlife and this became the subject of many of her paintings. Then her later work included time consuming and highly detailed pen & ink drawings, in particular, Japanese women. As the disease progressed and painting became more difficult, Joan’s ink drawings become more elaborate. She didn’t share her art widely. It would seem she underestimated the quality of her own work, but what was shared was greatly valued. Only after her death in June 2019 was the true extent of her collection of works uncovered.
