Judith Stroud
Judith Stroud was born in England and her early years were spent in Africa. After gaining a fine art degree at the West of England College of Art in Bristol, she moved to Wales and made a career in teaching art.
A director of Swansea Print Workshop, in 2005, she received an Arts Council Award to study Advanced Printmaking Techniques at Edinburgh Printmakers and implement these at the Workshop. From 2004 to 2006 she was the External Assessor in the Visual Arts, DACE, University of Wales. She is now concentrating on her own art interests.
The printmaking techniques and materials Stroud uses are an additional inspiration and each different process offers a new approach. This can lead to many contrasts and changes in scale. Recent printmaking interests are the Japanese technique of woodblock inked with watercolour, and the monotype process, which can be used with “freedom and spontaneity.”
The natural world, and in particular the landscape of Wales, is the starting point for much of her work. Her interest in wild flowers and herbs provides an endless source of ideas for her lino cuts. As a contrast, she has recently begun to develop work based on buildings and man- made objects and environments which she especially likes.
Judith Stroud’s work is in private and public collections including Swansea University, the National Library of Wales and the University at Buffalo.
She has exhibited nationally and internationally with recent exhibitions in Yorkshire and a solo exhibition at The National Botanic Garden of Wales in 2012.
