Matthew Wood

Matthew Wood studied at the Shrewsbury School of Art and Middlesex University. He gained an MA in Fine Art – Painting in 2001 from the University of Wales.

He was Lecturer of Art at Shrewsbury College for a number of years where he ran the Higher Level Art Programme before leaving to paint full-time.

He has exhibited widely in Wales and also in England and Europe. His work is held in collections in Ffin y Parc Gallery, Museum of Modern Art Wales (MOMA Wales) and Powis Castle (National Trust). Matthew Wood paints on found and fabricated sections of board, challenging himself to complete works in one sitting.

He works at site-specific locations, exploring the painterly depiction of space and distance and a sense of place and atmosphere. Unlike traditional landscape painters, however, Wood is also interested in the interiors of our man-made environment.

Matthew Wood’s atmospheric interiors shown in the gallery during July and August 2015 were a site-specific mini-series painted especially for the Attic Gallery’s Summer Group Show. The interiors were of St Silin’s Church, Llansillin which is part of the Living Stones Trail that runs through North Powys. Two paintings were completed on each of two visits.

The landscape paintings for the Summer Show of Llandinam Hill and the Berwyn Mountains were produced on a single evening visit on location on Broniarth Hill, part of an ancient Hill Fort near Meifod, North Powys. Matthew Wood finds Hill Forts particularly interesting as they always have spectacular views. He frequently paints at this particular location (dependent on weather) as it offers a variety of striking viewpoints of mid-Wales, including Llandinam Hill, Cader Idris, Aran Fawddwy and Cader Berwyn.
