Michael Howard

Michael Howard was born in Lancashire in 1950 and currently lives near Brecon. He attended Chelsea School of Art 1979 – 1982.

During the 1980s he was a successful Automata Maker exhibiting widely across the UK in public galleries, including the Victoria and Albert Museum. In the 1990s he began teaching and returned to painting.

In 2012 he left his job as Head of Art at Rugby School and is now painting full time and exhibiting regularly in Wales. "As a painter I am a visual recounter or interpreter of the world around me. My recent preoccupation has been with the hills and mountains that surround my home near Brecon. While they are, on the whole, topographically faithful, they also reflect the point where memory, experience and imagination converge. They reflect the struggle to resolve the visual issues and problems that are a constant companion of the creative process. In short they are primarily about pure painting.”
