    Statement for Artist 9

When drawing and painting outside, I make the land my own. I am aware that the geography and topography of my native Pembrokeshire has personal resonance, for wellbeing and a sense of self, and as the main driver for making art.

I embrace traditional approaches to landscape painting and challenge them through gestural mark-making and colour palette.

By making work outdoors, I am able to make a closer connection with landscape features, light, atmosphere and weather. Repeated visits to a specific location, Plumstone Mountain*, helped to build a collection of data. This has enabled the work to develop and become distilled in the studio environment. A similar approach will be significant for my future practice to evolve and progress, along with making a studio space within my home.

Making an immediate response to my surroundings and making ‘blind’ or unselfconscious recordings allows a closer emotional connection - through drawing, painting and mark-making outdoors.

I have also been experimenting with more abstract ideas, such as how to represent sounds using kinaesthetic or synaesthetic marks which I call ‘sound shapes’.  This has led to a new vocabulary which expresses sensory experience in the field. I intend to explore this further in my future practice.

*Plumstone Mountain is a small outcrop of Preseli bluestone, below which my great-uncle farmed the land and laid hedges
